Where it started
“Wait, I could learn to do that?!”
Some of my earliest music memories are motorhome trips with my dad, listening to “Ramblin’ Man” and “American Pie.” Before I ever played, I’d dig into bands, read through lyric booklets, and sing in my room.
Then, in high school, I watched a friend’s brother play guitar. Up to that point, guitar players were just people on records. Seeing someone do it right in front of me changed everything. I was about 15, and I wanted a guitar right then.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was the big one for me growing up. I spent years playing blues, country, and R&B in cover bands.
The turning point
Jesus rescued me.
Before Jesus, I was living a selfish, destructive, self-serving life that damaged my relationships and was full of alcohol and drugs.
When I was 26, Jesus saved me. He rescued me from that life and brought me into freedom, love, joy, peace, self-control, gratitude, and, most importantly, eternal communion with the Triune God. I didn’t clean myself up first. I couldn’t. While I was still a sinner, Christ died for me (Romans 5:8).
That’s why I’m not ashamed to talk about Jesus in my videos. What we do as worship guitarists is so much bigger than gear and tone.
Learning worship guitar
I didn’t know what I was doing.
After I was saved, I started serving at church. I’d played a lot of guitar by then, but I quickly realized I didn’t know what I was doing with worship music.
I was figuring out parts for myself and the other guitar player at our church, learning as I went, and finding out just how much I didn’t know. If you’ve ever felt lost trying to make a song sound right on Sunday, I’ve been there.
How GFHG began
Sharing what helped me.
As things started to click, I began posting playthroughs on YouTube. I knew how much a solid playthrough had helped me when I was learning a song, and I wanted to offer that same help to somebody else.
People started watching and reaching out. That led to lessons, and the same questions and struggles kept coming up. So I put those lessons together into a training program, hoping to help people work through the things I struggled with and get there a little quicker.
From the beginning, I wanted it to be clear that I love Jesus and I love the church, and I wanted to share the gospel in my videos too. That was always going to be part of Guitar for HIS Glory.
Today it’s training, song walkthroughs, presets, and amp captures, and I still help people one-on-one.
