Why theology matters in the songs we sing, and why you need to do something about it.

Why do I care so much about sound theology concerning the songs we sing? Why am I so PICKY? Why do I actually call a spade a spade and try to lead people away from songs that spread false ideas about the God we worship?

Here we go:

– Many of the believers I know don’t read their bibles. They’ll admit it. Some don’t know the foundational truths that underpin salvation.

– New believers are still being shaped in their walk with Christ.

– Some people get blown around by every cool sounding song and neatly phrased line.

– Some people fall for anything as long as it sounds cool and is popular.

– Most people are undiscerning.

This is my experience from interacting with thousands of worship guitar players out there. So I imagine the number only grows as we consider the entirety of believers.

In short: people get their framework for their doctrine—true or not—from their Pastor and the songs we sing.

THEREFORE…

          If you call God reckless.
If you say that God’s love “took a chance on me.”
          If you allude to evolution.
Or any of the other false or “walking the tightrope” lyrics out there today.

The people you shepherd will believe these things.

They’ll have a hard time understanding that God’s plan to redeem mankind was ordained before the foundation of the world. That he is perfect. Holy. Just. Loving. Far from reckless.

They’ll see “took a chance” and maybe think “maybe God took a chance and failed on me. Or maybe I’ll screw this whole thing up.”

They get CONFUSED.

I’m pleading with the folks who read this. Please take seriously your responsibility to sing TRUTH. Not your version of it. God’s version of it. Quit walking the line between right and almost right. Get picky. Go to your bible and test your lyrics. You have a HUGE responsibility. And you’re hugely talented. Wield your gift with more caution.

I say this in love. I really do.

Someone needs to speak up and get people thinking again. Our Savior didn’t address Pharisees in private, did he? He told his sheep about their error. We are called to spread the true gospel. So I’m doing my part in guarding folks from error.
